Both sides of the political aisle need to stop talking out of both sides of their mouths when it comes to honoring and upholding the law. We as Americans have an almost unshakable belief that our justice system is one of the best in the world, not perfect but not nearly as flawed or corrupt as others.
So given this, why is it that we expect other countries to honor our laws and legal system when we have a legal issue with foreign citizen and yet, when the situation is reversed we have no honor and respect for the laws and legal system of other countries?
Late this Spring a US Marine made a wrong turn and entered Mexico with firearms in his vehicle. He immediately declared those guns to the appropriate Mexican authorities and under Mexican law was detained and charged. The media is outraged that the Mexican government is enforcing it’s laws and is demanding that Mexico clear the Marine and return him to the US.
There are currently citizens of Central America fleeing to the US in the hopes of gaining amnesty and hopefully citizenship one day. The media is up in arms that the governments of those fleeing citizens aren’t respecting our immigration laws and we have tens of thousands of illegal immigrants flooding across our border seeking a safer and better life.
Why do we demand that countries violate their laws when it benefits an American and yet cry foul when countries refuse to honor our laws? Respect for legal systems is a two-way street, if we refuse to respect the decisions and laws of other countries why should other countries respect ours in return?
I don’t care if it is the Marine in Mexico or the horrible case of the Sudanese woman, the laws of another country deserve as much respect as our own laws. All political pundits, media, and parties need to stopping behaving like toddlers and realize that you have to have respect for the laws of other nations.
America used to be the beacon of hope and justice but that image is so tarnished now that beacon grows fainter and more dim daily.
