If so then you are in for a shocker, there is currently legislation proposed in Congress to AMEND the Constitution to limit Freedom of Speech. No, I didn’t make that up or find it from some far right wing or left wing political site. S.J. Resolution 19 introduced by Senator Tom Udall, with forty-three (43) co-sponsors seeks to limit free speech by amending the Constitution.
The proposed amendment seeks to limit political speech deemed inappropriate by Congress or the States. It is the most broadly written piece of legislation imaginable. Under the terms of the proposed amendment, any language that contributes to or funds spent by or for a political candidate can be limited.
Sounds reasonable on it’s face but reality is MUCH different. Any and all speech can be deemed political by the opposition. If you write a blog or post a video that discusses politics, that can be deemed speech that contributes funds spent by a candidate because your position means they have to spend that much less on their campaign. Films and records produced by big business would be subject to the same constraint on speech as you the little guy.
Are you as an American willing to forgo our nation’s rich history of political dissent and freedom of speech? Do you trust the Washington elite to not used this proposed Constitutional Amendment as a tool against political rivals and those that speak out against abuses in government?
Just imagine if this Amendment were the law of the land today, would we as a country be aware of the scandal and tragedy that is the Veteran’s Administration debacle? Would we be aware of the politics behind the humanitarian crisis on our southern border? Would we even be allowed to question the wisdom of pulling out of Iraq, and soon Afghanistan, before the war was won and without a Status of Forces Agreement in place to help stabilize and guide fledging democracies?
I am an American and as such I have the right to Freedom of Speech short of yelling fire in a crowded theater. I am an American my political views are not subject to censorship because those of opposing viewpoints wish to silence me. I am an American and this country was founded on political dissention and failure to comprehend that proves that those that favor this proposed lunacy have no comprehension of history.
I AM AN AMERICAN AND MY VOICE CANNOT, AND WILL NOT, BE SILENCED.
