We had a date night, well ok an afternoon, yesterday and we went to see Oz: The Great and Powerful in Imax 3D. It was amazing, Flying baboons are much more terrifying than flying monkeys were ax a child. 3D undoubtedly added to the experience but seriously baboons with huge teeth that fly is enough to terrify anyone.
Unlike the jaded critics, which thankfully we didn’t seek out until after we went to the movie, we both thoroughly enjoyed the film. It didn’t suffer from a lack of emotional depth, it did a very nice job of making the audience care about characters like Glinda and the Wicked Witch. In fact, the movie does something the original movie and the books failed to do, give a name to the Wicked Witch of the Eat and the Wicked Witch of the West, It also does a fantastic job of explaining how the wizard himself came to be in Oz while paying homage to the cinematography of the original movie.
The movie made me cry more than once. I particularly enjoyed the character development of the Wicked Witch of the East. Disney and company have done a wonderful job of providing back story to pivotal literary characters that stays true to the books and the Judy Garland classic. Yes I know there are plenty of people out there that will hate this movie for no other reason than Disney produced it but their opinions are about as meaningful to me as those of the critics.
If you are going to go see the film, I highly recommend seeing it in Imax 3D whenever possible. If not possible, still do yourself a favor and go see the film It is wonderful and a delightful romp through Oz.
