When is government intrusion into everyday life going to be considered having crossed the line? Apparently it is acceptable behavior for state and local governments to provide private companies with information on school children, from kindergarten through twelfth grade. They aren’t just tracking little Johnny’s attendance and grades any more. Now when little Johnny or Susie expresses an interest in a hobby it’s tracked and sold, when they participate in sports it’s tracked and sold, and when Susie fails to complete her homework that too is tracked and sold. Johnny or Susie has a learning disability, that too is tracked and sold.
Private companies are being given or sold this information by school districts and the consent of parents is NOT required. Every action a child takes during the hours they attend public school, no wait it also includes after school hour activities, is now going to be used by corporations to turn a profit. I have no qualms about corporations turning a profit and keeping Americans employed but where do we as a society draw the line? At what point do parents rebel and start acting like parents? Your children are the most precious thing in the universe and their private information is being utilized for purposes they are unaware of and of which you have no control over.
The corporations and teachers, hell they don’t deserve to be called teachers anymore, all claim it’s to tailor individual learning to each child. Wait what? There are enough teachers that every child will be given personalized, individualized teaching especially designed for their needs? Nope, that isn’t what will happen. What will happen is that child will be given generic learning tools designed for all those that like to play soccer for example and not Susie likes to play soccer on Wednesday’s, Tuesday and Thursday she takes ballet, and the rest of the week she’s outside playing in the mud with her siblings.
Teacher’s will no longer have to learn to suit their lesson plans to the largest common denominator in the class and provide individualized instruction to those children that need it. They are becoming nothing more than automatons that teach to the standardized test and consider the job well done. It used to be a profession I had respect for, my former sister-in-law teaches and my maternal grandmother taught. Gone are the days of classroom discipline and not being afraid to fail a student that deserves to fail. Instead, we have children that are basically literate but not much else. They aren’t taught study skills, they have zero fear of failure, they lack basic personal interaction skills, and aren’t even allowed to play tag during recess these days because it’s too violent.
So, parents my question to you is what are you going to say when your child discovers that his personal life is destroyed because some corporation failed to adequately protect his social security number and thieves stole it? What are you going to tell your child when she can’t get a job because she has a history of learning disabilities, no matter they’ve never been an obstacle she’s couldn’t overcome. What are you going to say when your son demands to know why he can’t get health insurance because some database held somewhere once noted that he liked to play with dolls with his sister and thus he may be a risk for health insurance later in life?
Government needs to butt out and let parents parent. Schools need to stop teaching to the test and start actually TEACHING students. It’s time to say, enough is enough and demand that government intrusion into personal lives stop. But by far the most important thing, is it is time for children to be children and to not have every mistake make it to their permanent record and to recognize that as human beings we are all fallible and imperfect.
