Almost through the first month of the year and there’s already an author who shocked me? Wasn’t expecting that when I purchased the book but it happened. Who is the author and which book? Dean Koontz and Odd Thomas are the author and his novel in question.
For years I’ve seen Odd Thomas novels on the shelves and have only picked up one of the books to read the dust jacket. I’ll admit, the book sounded like something I might enjoy but the author put me off the novels. From what I’ve read and talked about with other avid readers over the years, Dean Koontz was a writer much like Stephen King and I do not like Stephen King novels. Koontz got classified in my mind as an author primarily focused on horror genre, scary stuff that I do not enjoy reading, watching, or listening too at all.
So a couple of weeks ago, I took the plunge and downloaded a sample of Odd Thomas from Barnes & Noble to my Surface. I loved the sample and bought the entire book. What I did not expect was how funny the book turned out to be nor how emotional. The book is very well written, funny, sad, intriguing, and will have me reading more books in the series. The most surprising thing about the novel, the love story and how emotionally exhausted I was at the end of the book. I didn’t expect to spend the next couple of hours reaching out to reassure myself that my husband was still there and made of flesh and bones.
I won’t be picking up the second book in the series for a while though. I need some lighter reading between Odd novels. As enjoyable as the book was, emotionally draining novels requiring spacing between them otherwise I’ll end up on the sofa with a box of tissue, a gallon of rocky road ice cream, and a nose like Rudolph’s . I can skip that, I know DH would be happy if I didn’t put him through that, and so Odd Thomas book two is several months away. Nice thing about good books, they wait until you are ready to read them patiently and quietly.
